One in 10 people in Italy lived in absolute poverty in 2023, according to preliminary government figures.

According to Italy’s National Statistics Institute, 5.75 million Italians were living in absolute poverty in 2023.

This number was 5.670 thousand in 2022 and 5.320 thousand in 2021. Last year, 9.8 percent of the country’s total population was found to be in absolute poverty.

The institute defines a person living in absolute poverty as someone who lacks the resources to meet their basic needs such as food and clean drinking water, clothing, health care and shelter.

The institute’s statistics show that the highest levels of absolute poverty are found in the southern regions of the country, known mainly for agriculture, while the northern regions, known for their industrial sectors, show the lowest levels of poverty.

It noted that the level of poverty in the northern region has decreased sharply compared to other parts of the country.

14 percent of Italians under the age of 18 live in absolute poverty, while 11.9 percent of those aged 18 to 34 live in absolute poverty.

Similarly, only 6.2 percent of citizens over 65 live in the lowest economic category.

According to the institute, the main factor behind the rising percentage of Italians living in absolute poverty is inflation, which has outpaced economic growth in the past two years.

Last year, prices rose by an average of 5.9 percent, while the economy grew by 0.9 percent. Similarly, in 2022, the inflation rate was 8.1 percent while the economy grew by only 3.7 percent.
